Basics of Breastfeeding Education


ACED’s Basics of Breastfeeding Education is designed for aspiring birth doulas, postpartum doulas, and healthcare professionals.

As a participant in Basics of Breastfeeding Education, you will learn how to help parents initiate nursing with newborns as their doula or other care provider.  This class explores the many benefits of nursing as well as techniques for approaching nursing challenges with new parents.

Class topics include:

  • The anatomy of the breast/chest

  • Challenges and benefits of nursing

  • Different feeding styles

  • Lactation support for breastfeeding/chestfeeding parents

  • Latch techniques (including Baby-Led Latch)

By the end of the class, you will be able to describe the anatomy of the breast/chest and identify birth practices that are either supportive or harmful to nursing, and discuss the doula’s role in assisting with postpartum lactation support.

Basics of Breastfeeding Education meets the 3-hour Breastfeeding Education requirement for birth doula certification for 3.0 CEUs.
